Excel Celebrate 15 Years in Off-Site

Excel Celebrate 15 Years in Off-Site Construction Delivering High Performance Building Solutions

Where does the time go?

I can’t believe it’s almost 15 years since I began this journey with Excel Structures. A business with big ambitions, created to deliver the efficiency and fluency of offsite construction as a means of providing build solutions based on design and performance requirement, rather than being dictated to by single system limitations. The time was right to bring a more tailored, versatile and relevant approach to all things off-site.

The business was born out of 22 years experience working in design, business development, and the manufacture of panelised systems - (open, closed and advanced), bathroom pods and timber components, for established businesses and as a start-up enterprise (Pace Timber Systems), acquired by Kingspan in 2006.

For manufacturers, it is often necessary to make adjustments to the project to suit their business process, whether it be procurement, design, system performance, logistics, programming or budget. This can push the limitations of a particular system and add risk to a project. So the focus for a manufacturing business is to concentrate on work that provides the ability to manufacture effectively (and profitably)! In reality this is very difficult to achieve given the variable nature of construction projects and the result is often latent manufacturing capacity or down time – which costs the manufacturing business money.

The Excel approach is fundamentally different: one where the focus is solely on the needs of the project. And this is what differentiates us in the marketplace. Excel has developed relationships with dedicated and sustainable supply chain partners across a range of component manufacturing disciplines, providing them with component production that helps fill the factory down time.

Excel Structures stands as a project focussed specialist sub-contractor: one that can offer a range of offsite solutions (SIPs, timber frame, CLT and light gauge steel). It is a business model that ensures clients get the right technical and commercial solution for their project. After all, one size doesn’t fit all!

In addition, Excel Group has grown its window and door business, Excel Facades Ltd, in partnership with leading global brands to offer a complete glazing solution - either stand alone or as part of an offsite structural package. Further expansion into SFS infill and external cladding systems has also facilitated the offer of bespoke packages for customers, developers and contractors to suit specific needs.

Excel’s initial system agnostic consultative discussion is refreshing and serves to build trust on the basis that it is never going to be a single solution offering. Having a single point of contact for customers from project inception to completion is also seen as vitally important, and is why such a unique project management approach remains strong.

Along the way there have been great challenges and opportunities and I am eternally grateful to customers, friends and colleagues, past and present, who have supported Excel over the last 15 years in more ways than they are probably aware. I am also immensely proud of the Excel team who face the challenges and complexities of the construction industry in a growing business with enthusiasm, and who have an appetite to continuously learn and improve.

As part of Excel’s continued growth ambitions, achieving accreditations to the SafeContractor scheme, in addition to FENSA, GGF and the STA, serve to support the group’s overall quality and performance improvement strategy.

The latest business to be established is Excel Off-Site (Design & Build) Ltd. Developed to bring together many years of off-site experience and principle contracting by offering a complete turn-key offer for selected projects, fully delivering the advantages of modern methods of construction (MMC).

Being in a period where efficient construction techniques have to meet the critical need for sustainable, low carbon, low energy buildings, I believe the off-site industry has never had a better opportunity to support the UK’s road to net zero (whether the government does or not). There is currently a definite market pull towards low energy homes that I haven’t seen in over 35 years.  Maybe this is the tipping point?

I am excited to see where Excel and the construction industry will go in the next 15 years…………
